What is Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²)? The RTI² framework is a three-tier model that provides an ongoing process of instruction and interventions that allow students to make progress at all levels, particularly those students who are struggling or advancing.

All students receive Tier 1 research-based, high quality, general education instruction that incorporates ongoing screening and assessments to inform instruction. Weakley County schools administer a Universal screener three times throughout the school year to identify students who may be struggling in Reading, Math, and/or Written Expression skills.

The students below the 25th percentile are then given a Survey Level Assessment (SLA) that helps us determine the specific skill/skills that the student is struggling with. The survey level assessment data, along with the universal screener data and data from their general education instruction is used to place students into Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions.

Tier 2 intervention is implemented when assessments indicate that a student is not making adequate gains from Tier 1 instruction alone. In addition to their Tier 1 instruction, students are provided small group intervention designed to meet their specific skill deficits that was determined by the survey level assessments. Student progress is monitored using a tool that is sensitive to measuring changes in the student’s individual skills.

Tier 3 is more intensive interventions that are provide to students who have not made adequate progress in Tier 2, who are more than 1.5 grade levels behind, or who are below the 10th percentile on the Universal Screener. The interventions are planned according to the students’ specific skill deficit that was determined by the survey level assessment. Student progress is monitored using a tool that is sensitive to measuring changes in the student’s individual skills.

Weakley County Schools understands the importance in communicating with parents regarding their students’ academic progress. We send home the Universal Screener score reports after each screening (fall, winter, spring) for all students who complete the Universal Screener. If a student is placed in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention, a parent letter is sent home communicating that this support is being provided to help their student be successful. We also send home progress monitoring reports regularly to keep parents involved in their student’s progress.

Here are a few ways parents can support what their child is doing in school:
• Make reading an everyday habit in the home.
• Communicate with your child’s teacher.
• Monitor and assist with homework assignments.
• Review progress monitoring data.
• Share your child’s successes.
• Learn more about the curricula and interventions being used in your child’s school.
• Attend parent/teacher conferences and other school meetings about your child.
