april feature teachers

Weakley County Schools is proud to introduce this month’s “Feature Teachers,” recognized for embodying our district’s core values of purpose, connection, and growth.

Representing the Pre-K–5th grade band is Jessica Fortner, an educator at the Personal Development Center whose compassion and commitment are changing lives. Representing grades 6–12 is Amy Lawrence of Gleason School, whose behind-the-scenes efforts and front-line leadership make her a true MVP of the classroom and beyond.

Each month, two educators, one from the elementary grade band and one from the secondary grade band, are chosen based on nominations that shine a light on their dedication, impact, and meaningful connections with students. To celebrate, the honored teachers are surprised with a visit to their classroom and receive the coveted 6-foot-tall “Feature Teacher” trophy—a bold, traveling symbol of excellence.

At the Personal Development Center, Mrs. Jessica has created a learning environment rooted in trust, connection, and high expectations. Students come to her classroom with significant challenges standing in the way of their learning. Mrs. Jessica embraces those challenges and uses her expertise to crack the code for each student, helping them learn the skills they need to be successful at school.

“Ms. Jessica is challenged with a variety of different grade levels and abilities of students that she serves daily,” shared Krystle Smith, Personal Development Center Administrator. “Her ability to form strong relationships with her students is what sets her apart. She knows that those connections are essential to both academic and personal success. She’s moved every single one of her students forward—both academically and socially.”

Jessica’s classroom is a true reflection of what purpose-driven teaching can look like. Decreased behavioral issues, student success stories, and even transitions back to the student’s home schools are evidence of her impact. “She will tell you that her purpose is her students’ success, and she means it. Her dedication is unwavering, and her heart is fully in it. We are so blessed to have her at the PDC,” said Smith.

At Gleason, Amy Lawrence is the definition of connection, and a beloved one at that. While her official role is the school librarian, she’s also the school’s Family Engagement Coordinator, Social Media/Website Manager, Spanish class supervisor, study hall supporter, lunch monitor, event planner, and more, depending on the day.

“She’s truly everywhere,” said Principal Lee Lawrence. “Amy brings calm, capability, and connection to everything she encounters, from guiding high schoolers to reading with kindergarteners. She’s constantly finding creative ways to bring students together, like our reading partners program that bridges grades and builds relationships.”

Her steady presence has shaped countless student experiences this year, and her leadership behind the scenes helped make both the WCS Arts Festival and recent school board presentations seamless successes.

These educators reflect what it means to live out Weakley County Schools’ mission every day.

“As we recognize these two educators, we are reminded of the power of educators who lead with both purpose and heart,” said Assistant Director of Schools Betsi Foster. “Jessica’s ability to reach students with a wide range of needs and guide them toward academic and personal breakthroughs is nothing short of remarkable. At the same time, Amy’s behind-the-scenes leadership, willingness to step into any role, and her commitment to building strong student connections across grade levels have made a lasting impact at Gleason. These teachers exemplify what it means to be difference-makers in education.”

These teachers will be featured across social media and will enjoy a month of hosting the “Feature Teacher Trophy” in their classrooms.
