In Weakley County, school board members aren’t just names listed on a roster. They’re neighbors, community members, colleagues, and friends. They live here, work here, and are deeply embedded in the community they serve, and that connection matters. It’s a connection that indicates the investment of time and care that benefits not only Weakley County Schools, but our county as a whole.

In Weakley County, our schools acknowledge what students face — and celebrate how they rise. Those moments of growth and achievement are not accidental. They are made possible through the daily work of dedicated teachers and staff, supported by a school board that works behind the scenes to address community concerns, classroom priorities, and student needs with intention. Together, that leadership and commitment help create supportive environments where students can truly thrive.

Public education plays a critical role in the development of Weakley County — educating young people who will one day lead our workforce, our communities, our local government, and beyond. In today’s world, that responsibility extends beyond academics alone. While strong instruction remains the foundation of our schools, the Weakley County School Board also prioritizes programs and resources that support students outside the classroom.

By investing in mental and emotional support, creative outlets, and innovative approaches to learning, the Board consistently centers its decisions on people — not just policies or programs. This approach helps ensure students are prepared not only academically, but socially and emotionally, and remains a defining strength of Weakley County Schools. Not only do board members make decisions on the local level and at the state level, they advocate for funding, policies, and resources that support students, educators, and the long-term success of our county.

Director of Schools Jeff Cupples highlighted the board’s steady leadership and collaborative mindset.

“This is a board that leads with unity and purpose,” Cupples said. “They consistently put students first while also understanding the importance of supporting our educators and strengthening our community. That balance is what allows us to have schools that serve students well today and into the future.”

As School Board Appreciation Month is recognized, Weakley County Schools extends sincere gratitude for the unwavering dedication of Gath Meeks, District 1 (Dresden and Palmersville); Beau Atkins, District 2 (Gleason); Jeff Floyd, District 3 (Greenfield); Vice Chair Martin Hamlin, District 4 (Sharon); Wendell Cates, District 5 (Martin); Steve Vantrease, District 6 (Martin); Doug Sims, District 7 (Martin); John Hatler, District 8 (Martin); and Chairman Josh Moore, District 9 (Dresden). The district also recognizes Patricia Adams, Bookkeeper for the Director of Schools, who has served as Board Secretary for 16 years.

With each decision, these members defend the right of every child in Weakley County to not only receive an education, but challenge them to grow, succeed, and reach their full potential. Our students are our future — and every decision made in their favor is an investment in the future of Weakley County.

Weakley County Schools appreciates the dedication of our school board members who lead this work with care and commitment.
