Safe Schools Programs for Weakley County Schools

Keeping students safe is our top priority. Through our Safe Schools Program, we work every day to make sure our classrooms, hallways, and campuses are welcoming and secure places to learn.

This program coordinates efforts under Tennessee’s S.A.V.E. (Schools Against Violence in Education) Act—a state initiative dedicated to creating and maintaining safe learning environments. Previously known as the Safe and Drug Free Schools Program, our updated focus goes beyond academics to protect the well-being of every child.

We partner with local agencies, provide technical support to our schools, and serve as a resource for families and community members. From prevention programs to emergency planning, our goal is simple: every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Firearm Safety

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain Weakley County Schools’ top priority. Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, all Tennessee public schools are required by law (Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-6-1016) to provide age-appropriate firearm safety instruction for students in grades K–12.

Instruction will use resources provided by the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Our goal is simple: to make sure every child understands how to stay safe if they ever encounter a firearm. This is a state mandate, and parents do not have the option to exclude their child from participation.

Letters to each family will go home with the date the topic will be presented at their child's school to allow families to discuss the topic with their child beforehand. Below you will find the materials that will be presented.

These lessons will focus solely on safety—there will be no real firearms or live ammunition involved. Students will learn how to:

  • Understand the importance of safe firearm storage

  • Recognize firearm-related safety expectations at school

  • Know what to do if they ever find a firearm

  • Never touch a firearm that they may encounter

  • Immediately notify an adult if they see a firearm
