michaela frederick holds a large check denoting her a tennessee early educator of the year

Weakley County Schools is thrilled to share that Sharon School’s Michaela Frederick has been named a Tennessee Early Educator of the Year, one of only 10 educators selected for the statewide honor from approximately 1,800 nominees.

The award recognizes exceptional early childhood educators and the important role they play in helping Tennessee’s youngest students learn, grow, and build a strong foundation for the years ahead.

Frederick was surprised with the honor at Sharon School, surrounded by students, colleagues, family members, and school and district leaders. As part of the recognition, she received a $1,000 cash award and will receive a $1,000 Lakeshore Learning shopping spree in Nashville later this fall.

Frederick is described by her peers as an educator who truly meets children where they are and finds the tools that allow each of them to be successful, using everything from push-button communication and visual schedules to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices and other individualized supports.

Dr. Michelle Clements, Principal at Sharon School, has seen firsthand how Frederick’s approach creates opportunities for every child to participate, connect, and grow.

“Ms. Michaela is an exceptional educator who truly focuses on educating the whole child. She believes every child, regardless of ability level, deserves meaningful access to learning, communication, relationships, and every part of the school experience,” said Clements. “We are incredibly proud that Ms. Michaela is being recognized as Tennessee’s Early Educator of the Year. She represents the very best of what early childhood education should be, and we are fortunate to have her serving the children and families of Sharon School.”

That commitment to meeting students where they are reflects the larger role early educators play across Weakley County Schools, helping children build the confidence that they carry with them into the years ahead.

“To be selected as one of just 10 educators from 1,800 nominees is an incredible honor, and one that is well deserved,” shared Jeff Cupples, Director of Weakley County Schools. “Ms. Michaela understands how important these early years are, and she pours that understanding into the way she serves her students and families. We are proud of the work she is doing at Sharon School and proud to have educators like her building strong beginnings for children across Weakley County.”

Frederick’s recognition marks the second consecutive year a Weakley County Schools educator has been selected for the statewide honor. In 2025, Martin Primary School Educational Assistant Brandie Roberts was named a Tennessee Early Educator of the Year.

For our youngest students, a great beginning can shape everything that follows. Weakley County Schools is proud to celebrate Michaela Frederick and the early educators across our district who make sure those beginnings are filled with discovery, belonging, and the belief that every child can grow.
